The three sonatas presented here share the tonality of D (two in the major and one in the minor key) but are radically different from one another not only in character but in their compositional elements as well. These works highlight in my opinion Beethoven’s ingenuity, imagination and the will that enabled him
not just to explore and utilize the existing conventional compositional forms, but also to expand and ultimately transform them from within. – Luisa Guembes-Buchanan
